Understanding the appeal of betting on Dota 2

The key to understanding why Dota 2 betting is popular, you’ll need to understand how Dota 2 works. The game takes a 5v5 format, and is always played on the same map. There are three lanes – top, mid, and bottom. Additionally, there is also a Jungle area. Strats for both teams, hero selections, and so on, all depend on the map and opposing team’s choices.

There are a lot of different combinations of heroes and strategies possible, and since the game creator Valve frequently updates the game and makes balance changes, it’s important to always keep up to date with the meta in order to place successful bets on Dota 2.

Esports betting sites usually offer a variety of different possible bets on Dota 2 – here’s how to make the most of it!

Dota 2 odds

Dota 2 competitions usually consist of a Bo3 or Bo5 format, so multiple games are played for each match. Therefore, you can bet on different aspects of the competition. Of course, you can bet on the overall outcome of the game, but you can also bet on individual round results, first blood, and things like most kills.

The exact options depend on each of the bookmakers that offers Dota 2 odds. You’ll have to check out different bookmakers to find the one that suits you best and offers the things you are looking for!

Understanding odds

Dota 2 odds can come in one of two typical formats – either in an A/B fractional format, or as decimal odds. The former is written out as a 3/5 odds, for example. This can be read as that B has a 67% chance of winning here, and A a 37% chance. This way, you can decide to bet either for or against the more likely winner – which of course will affect your potential winnings.

The other alternative are decimal odds. These are easier to understand especially for betting beginners – they are written as 5.6. It refers to the winnings you would get if you placed the bet. Betting $1 on a 5.6 match means that you would get back $5.60.

Dota 2 odds can be shown in either of these two formats – and they are available for any of the different things you can bet on Dota 2 for. There is also the possibility of a handicap – in particularly uneven games, bookmakers may decide to apply a handicap to make the outcome a little less surefire.

This kind of handicap could be, on a Bo5 game, a handicap of 1 game for the weaker team. So if you bet on the weaker team, which would normally have to win 3 of the 5 matches, they would only need to win 2 for you to win your bet. Of course, the actual game result would still be a loss for the weaker team, however your bet would be a win regardless! If the weaker team only wins 1 game, you would lose your bet. This kind of esports odds can make otherwise uninteresting matches more exciting, as the result is far less ‘clear’.

Learning the odds

Of course, like with any kind of esports odds, there are plenty of different things that can affect the outcome of a game. Since Dota 2 is always played on the same map and with a pool of heroes whose efficiency depends on the Meta of the game. To really do well in placing your Dota 2 bets, you’ll need to not only learn about the Meta and the competing teams, but also about the other things that can affect how a match plays out.

Different players and teams use different strategies and respond differently to the various situations that happen in professional Dota 2 competitions – and it’s understanding all that that will really make a difference when it comes to making the right Dota 2 bets!
