Blackjack Tips for Beginners:

Crucial Mistakes to Avoid

There are certain mistakes that novice players seem to be very prone to making. The reason for this probably resides with the fact that particular actions at the table seem to make perfect sense even though they go against the underlying principles of the game. These blackjack tips for beginners will shed some light on those situations and explain why you should avoid such “natural” moves.

Splitting 10s

One of the most common mistakes new players make is splitting a pair of Tens (or picture cards). It does seem to make sense because a 10 is such a valuable card with great potential. If you play two hands containing one 10 each, you stand to end up with two great hands, right?

The problem with this logic is that you are deciding to ruin a very strong hand, valuing 20, which stands to win most of the time, for hope to make two big hands. If you make just one, it usually won’t be enough (unless the dealer busts) and you will end up winning nothing whereas you were in a great spot to lock the winning hand. Occasionally, you will win on both hands, but the amount of times this happens is not enough to justify splitting 10s, ever.

Contrary to what may seem logical, splitting 10s when a dealer is showing an Ace especially doesn’t make sense. If he makes 21, the best you are hoping for is to get your money back and you have to risk two bets to do it. If he doesn’t make 21, then your 20 will probably win.

Taking insurance or surrendering

When the dealer is showing that dreaded Ace, players often start to panic. It is true that he has 50% of the blackjack in front of him, but it is also true that he is only halfway there and there are more cards that won’t bring him home than those that will.

For that reason, insurance is the “sucker’s” bet. It only pays 2 to 1 in a situation where the dealer is 9 to 4 to make the blackjack. It does nothing to protect your hand, it is a completely separate bet, so you are just losing money. For example, if you placed $1 insurance bet 130 times, you would win 40 times (+$80) and lose 90 times (-$90), for a total loss of $10.

What about surrendering?

Surrendering your bet is bad for similar reasons. There are very few situations where your hand has so bad odds against the dealer that it warrants giving up half of your bet without a fight. Some situations where surrender may be a viable option are when you have 16 against the dealer’s Ace or Ten, but even if you’ve never surrendered, you wouldn’t be making a mistake at all. On the other hand, surrendering too much is definitely a big mistake. Note that the Blackjack basic strategy makes no mention of the surrender.

Playing lengthy sessions

One of the crucial blackjack tips for less experienced players is to be very mindful of how long they play in any particular sessions. If you are a novice, after a couple of hours at the table, especially if things are not going your way, you will start making mistakes. You will begin increasing bets and deviating from the strategy, trying to get lucky, and that’s the fastest route to busting your bankroll. The same goes for drinking while playing; a couple of beers are fine, of course, but too much alcohol will cloud your judgment.

These blackjack tips & tricks are primarily meant to save you money. As they say, penny saved is penny earned and this is particularly true for gambling. Preserving your bankroll is of vital importance as no lucky streak will save you if you dig yourself into too deep a hole.

Making Money With Blackjack:

Tips for Winners

Following the above advice is guaranteed to save you some money. However, there are also fairly simple things you can do at the tables (and even away from them) that will help you squeeze the most value out of certain situations.

Always split a pair of 8s

While most players know perfectly well that two 8s are a horrible hand to begin with, they are not certain when they should split and when they should stand. The answer is really simple. Always split. Even if the dealer is showing an Ace, giving you a really bad chance to win, you should still split and try to catch a decent hand on at least one of your deals. You can’t really expect to win when you start with 16, but by always splitting you will give yourself better odds in the long run.

Doubling down tips

Doubling your bet at the right time can earn you a lot of money in blackjack, but once again, players are often uncertain as to when to do it and end up doing it “by feel.” Whenever you try to beat a mathematical game by using your feelings as the guide, results are guaranteed to be less than satisfactory in the long run.

Here are a few blackjack tips & tricks on when you should double down:

  • When you are dealt a total of 11, always double down
  • When you have a total of 10 and the dealer has 9 or less
  • Double down on a 9 total if the dealer is showing 4, 5 or a 6
  • Don’t be afraid to double on soft 17 and 18 if the dealer has 3, 4, 5, or 6

Taking advantage of online blackjack bonuses

Winning blackjack players know that free money is good money. You absolutely must take full advantage of generous welcome (and occasional reload) bonuses to boost your bankroll. There are really no downsides to doing it except for the fact it will take you a while to meet the playthrough requirements. If you are depositing just to play a few hands and withdraw, then a bonus may not be for you, but otherwise, you should always take that extra edge.

These tips for blackjack will only get you so far. If you really want to play the winning game, then you will need to know what to do in every possible situation without giving it a second thought. The best part is, memorizing this strategy doesn’t take too much time at all.
